Summer Pest Control Tips to Keep Pests at Bay

The summer season brings out about an increase in pest invasion, which is attributed to higher breeding rates as a result of increased temperatures. The breeding process is a natural occurrence that we cannot control; therefore, the available option is to keep the pests away from our homes. It would be best if you employed different deterrent measures as there are various pests that can invade your home from mosquitoes, rodents, flies to cockroaches.

The following are pest control tips that you can employ in the summer to keep pests at bay.

1. Clear the Yard

Your yard can serve as a haven for pests to breed and grow their colonies. Clear overgrown vegetation and drain stagnant water in the yard. Rodents and snakes particularly love such areas if left unattended.

2. Maintain Cleanliness

The main reason that pests come into the home is to scavenge for food. When you leave food particles on your kitchen floor, you are attracting pests such as cockroaches, ants, and rats. The same applies when you leave your food uncovered; the pests will come and nibble away on the food. This poses a health risk as they can contaminate the food with germs from other hazardous food sources.

3. Seal Access Points

Rats and mice get into the home through openings that have been left unattended. Inspect your home and identify such access points that pests can use to get into your home. If there are air vents in the house, keep them clean and fit them with a screen to prevent pests from accessing your home through them.

4. Plant great-smelling Plants

Pests such as houseflies do not like the smell given by plants such as lavender, lemon verbena, basil, thyme, bay, mint, and chamomile. Place the plants on your doorways and window sills to keep flies at bay.

5. Fix Leakages Promptly

Cockroaches are attracted to moisture. Leaky pipes and faucets provide an ideal environment for cockroaches to breed in the home. It is for this reason that you should regularly inspect the house to identify any water leakages to avoid attracting pests.

6. Clear Stagnant Water Pools

Stagnant water in the summer season is a perfect breeding point for mosquitoes. Water pools should be cleared to prevent this from happening. If the water is in large quantities such that draining it is impossible, you can pour oil on top of the water to starve it of oxygen which is necessary for mosquitoes to breed.

If mosquitoes manage to get into the home, apply a mosquito repellent ointment on the body to deter them and in worst-case scenarios, sleep under a mosquito net.

7. Try a Cat

Cats and rats are sworn, enemies. A cat in the home will keep rats and mice at bay both indoors and outdoors. It is said that cats also fight snakes; thus, snakes cannot get into the house when there is a cat around the compound. In summary, pests appear more in the summer season.
